FEBRUARY ’23

A WORD FROM THE FOUNDER:
3000 MILES

We have two fellow members by the name of Charlie Layton & Ben Towill who decided to compete in a rowing race that spanned 3,000 miles across the Atlantic ocean. Read that one more time – it’s a rowing race, not a sailing race. 40 days on the water, thousands of miles from the closest land mass, no safety boat by their side, buckets for toilets & no more than 90 minutes of sleep at a shot for at least 6 weeks. We worked with them daily for two years & I honestly still can’t tell you their WHY behind this entire thing. What I do know for a fact is that they set this audacious goal more than three years ago & it has been ingrained in their minds ever since. I’m sure if you asked them not more than one day has gone by over the last three years where this race didn’t pop in their minds. Still I kept asking myself, WHY are they doing this?

But after two years of watching them train, that WHY started to turn around & I started asking myself, WHY am I not competing in a race? WHY am I not doing something cool & challenging? WHY am I not setting an audacious goal? This is when it started to hit me – knowing THEIR WHY isn’t really the question. The most important thing we can take away from their goal & journey is the audacity to set an outrageous goal for ourselves & begin OUR own journey. If they can set a goal to row across the Atlantic ocean, why can’t WE set a goal to run a 5k next month? Why can’t WE take those first steps at starting that business idea we’ve always wanted to attempt. Why can’t WE just GO & DO & see what happens & learn from those attempts instead of putting our goal off because everything has to be just right?

If there is one thing I hope you take away from this piece & their journey it’s that two years ago neither one of them even knew how to row a boat. But, they set a [then] unimaginable goal & figured it out as they went along. They had many challenging & failing days before they even started the race, but ultimately those are the days they are going to remember the most. The struggle, the headaches, the sadness & loneliness of leaving family & friends. They calculated the height of their cliff, jumped off & built the plane on the way down.

Go find your own 3,000 miles & take that first little leap. You might be surprised by what you learn about yourself.

Be bold.
Take responsibility.
Go forth towards discomfort

PS – They also took 1st place in pairs
